Great developments have been witnessed at the international or regional level in the field of torture prevention through the institutionalization of mechanisms that seek to monitor and sanction human rights violations.
NGOs play an important role in monitoring government’s compliance with their legal obligations, in documenting cases of torture, and in providing information on torture cases to relevant monitoring and complaint mechanisms or bodies at both the national and the international level.
The following mechanisms aim at monitoring state compliance with the international and regional instruments seen earlier, and may be particularly useful to torture victims as they provide possibilities for an individual complaint procedure.
