About the TCSVT

The Trauma Centre Officially opened in 1993 with a mission to provide psychological, social and medical assistance to survivors of political violence in the Western Cape. Since it’s founding, The Trauma Centre has grown into one of the largest facilities of its kind in South Africa and on the African continent. The Trauma Centre provides informed, accessible, preventative and curable mental health services to individuals, groups, families, communities and institutions that have experienced, or are affected by violence and human rights violations in our society. We believe that mental health services are an essential part of contributing towards a healthy nation, and that people harmed by human rights abuse and violence of any kind should have access to good quality and appropriate mental health services, which address the relevant range of psycho-social concerns.

We offer the following services:

  • Psychological
  • Counseling
  • Community visits
  • Family based interventions
  • Massage therapy
  • Referrals to various social services, legal assistance , medical and psychiatric assessments and networks
  • Information dissemination
  • Advocacy

The mission and objectives of the TCSVT are: to relieve the traumatic stress of those affected by violence; to develop and implement preventative interventions that impact cycles of violence, based on a respect for human rights; and to identify and analyse the origins and dynamics of violence and trauma to inform our intervention strategy.
